Oklahoma State just ended Oregon's 41-game streak.

Oklahoma State 39, Oregon 31 at Boone Pickens Stadium. This is the same Oregon team that dropped 66 on this same Oklahoma State team last year. That is a program-defining response.

Drew Mestemaker went 26-of-43 for 317 yards and three total touchdowns. He also threw two interceptions. He also gave the Cowboys 547 yards of offense against a defense that had a top-ten pedigree walking in. That is what a real quarterback game looks like. Mistakes and all, he was the best player on the field.

Dante Moore did his thing for Oregon. 14-of-29 for 191 yards and two touchdowns, including a 38-yard laser to Evan Stewart in the fourth quarter that briefly gave Oregon a 31-30 lead. It was the kind of throw that made you think Oregon was about to steal one on the road.

Mestemaker answered on the very next drive with a 10-yard rushing touchdown to put it back. Oregon never led again.

That is a program win.

The number that is going to travel: Oregon had won 41 straight against unranked opponents. Forty-one. That streak is dead. The Ducks have been the algorithm's team for two years. Nobody wanted to say the quiet part out loud. Oklahoma State just said the quiet part out loud at 3:00 in the afternoon on national television.

This is the win that resets the entire narrative about his program. You bring back No. 6 in the country and hang 547 yards on them a year after they put 66 on you? That is not a fluke. That is a statement of intent.

Meanwhile Oregon has real problems. Dan Lanning is going to be asked all week why his top-ten defense gave up 547 yards to a team that lost 12 games last year. He does not have a good answer. The Ducks were paper-tigered in Stillwater and everybody with a TV saw it.

Oklahoma State cannot lose the next one. That is how these things go. You steal a signature win, you go home, you read the headlines, and you lose the next week to a middle-of-the-conference team you should have beaten by 20. That is the trap. Gundy has to make sure his guys treat next Saturday like a business trip.

Oregon has to figure out what version of the Ducks showed up in Stillwater and how to keep them from showing up again. A 547-yard defensive failure does not usually get fixed in one week. Lanning has three weeks of tune-ups before the real Big Ten season starts. He needs every one of them.
